Project Overview

The City of Fort Myers held a preconstruction public information meeting for the S.R. 82 Widening Project.

The S.R. 82 Widening project multi-lanes the existing roadway to six lanes from Ortiz Avenue to south of Lee/Colonial Boulevard (C.R. 884) and reconfigures the intersection at Buckingham Road.  New traffic signals will be added at the Buckingham Road intersection and at the Forum Boulevard intersection. This project also includes widening the ramps at I-75 and installing new sidewalks, lighting and landscaping.  Water, sewer and storm drainage will be replaced along the entire corridor.

This 3.3-mile arterial roadway links the City of Fort Myers to Lehigh Acres and Lee County to Hendry and Collier counties.  S.R. 82 is designated by the Florida DOT as part of the emerging Strategic Intermodal System (SIS).

The Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization identified the widening of S.R. 82 from Ortiz Avenue to Lee/Colonial Boulevard as a part of the 2030 Financially Feasible Plan.  The City of Fort Myers also identified this project in their Comprehensive Plan.

A unique aspect of this project is the cooperation of three government entities working together with private developers to expedite this project. A public/private partnership between the City of Fort Myers, Florida DOT, Lee County and the developments along S.R. 82 makes this project possible.
